Getting the hell outta Dodge

The theme for today was "chucking it all and heading to Mexico."

Husband and I spent the day joking about our newest plan. To leave it all behind: stress at work, Husbands impending job search, our stupid broken condo, our evil neighbors... and just run away to Mexico. The little savings we have should get us there, and once we arrive we'll live in a shack near the beach under the names Paco and Rosa (we haven't decided which one of us will be Rosa). I'm pretty sure the smattering of high school Spanish that I can still recall would allow us to blend right in.

Bean, or Pinto as she will hence forth be called, can run naked on the beach picking up shells and possibly eating them. I figure she doesn't need to wear clothes until she's maybe 5 or so, right? Little Pinto would grow up bilingual. I could have a little vegetable garden, and maybe some chickens. Husband could work as a handyman (he's very handy). It really doesn't sound so bad.

What's your secret escape plan?

if the election turns out the opposite of what I would like, we escape to Canada.

For other occurrences that would require an escape plan I've set our sites on Amsterdam.

Australia. Definitely Australia. Don't know what we'd do, but I'm sure we'd figure it out eventually....

That's a no-brainer for us: Far Off Land. Once we blew all our money getting there, we could live in a bus and no one would bat an eye. And at least we'd have free government health care.

You have to redo some rooms, right? How about painting beach murals on the walls and covering the floor with sand until the insurance money comes through?

I have frequently joked with a colleague about running off to Belize. I've got a few grand stashed away and we could start a lab there. A few grand in Belize could last us years. Plus, then we could lay on the beach and drunk fruity drinks in between doing science.

Do you notice that my run away fantasy still involves science? That's right, because I am just such a nerd. I imagine I would have to take the Isis clan with me though.

Oh we so do this!
My personal escape route has been "housewife" especially since DH's fellowship has extra money for a non-income-earning spouse built in, all we'd have to do is ask!

But our real alternative dream plan is to buy an old bed and breakfast and be overly educated inn keepers... somewhere on the ocean... with a big front porch, and a hammock/tree swing *sigh*

...but Mexico sounds nice too :)

Canada!

If scientific funding is neglected in the U.S., which impedes whether or not either one of us gets tenure, we would seriously look at Canada.

Anyplace with mountains. Colorado, New Zealand, Chile...

I'd hike around taking photos and make money selling them. Minnow and Princess Pup would happily scamper along behind me. Hey, we're dreaming right.

Hmmm, I don't know because I haven't really thought about it. Definitely some place with sun, a beach, an ocean, and a sea kayak.

I haven't decided if I am going to take the family with me.

Sell the house, buy a boat instead, equip it with kayaks and lots of booze, and just take off... I can make money by professional blogging (right???) and my husband is a very good carpenter, so he's set.

A bar on a beach. Utopia, really.

Personally, I've always seen myself on a small island in the Caribbean, lounging lazily on a hammock somewhere with a coconut or something. I, also, would have a little hut on the beach. I would make my husband catch fish, and I would cook. I imagine I'd tire of this after a couple of weeks or so, though. Maybe I should just take a vacation instead. :)

Mine would involve opening a cafe on the Costa Brava in Spain...I cook, I bake, I love Spain.

By the way, anyone seriously considering coming to Canada should probably start applying NOW. There was a huge backlog 4 years ago that held my permanent residence application up for 6months. As someone applying from within Canada I am processed through Buffalo, along with all the US applicants... and some of them are still not in yet apparently!

I'm honestly planning on getting the hell away from my family for a weekend in the not so distant future. Want to come with me?

If the shit really hits the fan here and McCain gets elected, we've talked about moving to New Zealand. We have friends there and could live in a lovely intentional community. If only it weren't so far away.

Hmmm... escape is horticulture for me. Or growing fruit in the country side and making jam. Having chickens for organic free range eggs.

On the other hand, if escape was accompanied by copious and excess funds, then I would probably pop into the lab once or twice a week to hang out and think about science. Maybe.

I'm planning on running a cattery somewhere with a view of the sea and the mountains - at least all the crap would be solid, shovelable and produced through an organic process by something cute and furry!
